About Nora Zaki

Nora grew up with an American mother who was raised Catholic but converted to Islam before Nora was even born and an Arab Muslim father.  Thus, she has been exposed to an interfaith (Muslim and Christian) extended family from a young age. Additionally, her parents were actively involved in interfaith groups and Nora has memories as a young girl going to different religious places of worship. This inspired her love of religious diversity and her commitment to ensuring that religious and spiritual needs of people are met.

Nora Zaki (she/hers), Master of Divinity, is a University of Chicago Divinity School graduate. She served as Advisor for Muslim Life at Vassar College and Muslim Chaplain at Bard College, the latter where she also taught First Year Seminar.  She’s worked as a college chaplain at Dominican University, the first Muslim hospital chaplain at Tampa General Hospital, and has volunteered as a prison chaplain in both Chicago and Tampa.

She is working on a second Master’s degree, an MA in Islamic Education, from Bayan, housed within Chicago Theological Seminary, taking courses on identity development, ethics, and leadership. Nora is a recipient of the Muslimah Changemaker Scholarship at Bayan.

Nora served as a secretary of the Association for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Life in Higher Education (ASCHLE) from 2021-2022, and is a member of the Association of Muslim Chaplains (AMC). She is interested in Quranic and Islamic Studies, particularly Islamic ethics. Nora has been published in the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab and has a chapter in the book, One Nation, Indivisible: Seeking Liberty from the Pulpit to the Streets.

She will also be published in the forthcoming encyclopedia, “Religion and World Civilizations: How Faith Shaped Societies from Antiquity to the Present (3 Vols.)” with the entries, “Origins of Sufism” and “Methodologies of Tazkiyat al-Nafs.”

Nora has studied Arabic in several Middle Eastern countries.  Fluent in Arabic, Nora is learning Turkish and loves cooking all types of food.
